. . .
The site nestles in a fold of the soft Avon countryside covering 30 acres, almost

ground. A stream running through a gully, offers a perfect area ideal for bivouacking.
Many kinds of wildlife abound on the site and surrounding areas, which also supports a
large and varied collection of trees and flora. A Nature Trail has been written to help
you wnjoy the features of the site.
Facilities included a gravelled roadway, leading to a car park, next to which are the
toilet blocks. Water points are located around the site. A modern barn is available as
alternative wet weather accommodation (particularly for Cub Scouts).

every taste.

sea at Weston-super-Mare,
exploring Wessex history at Glastonbury
and Wells; not to mention
daytrips to Bristol Zoo, the Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge, Longleat House and Lions, and the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, ss Great Britain and The
Matthew - many more, enough to suit any Cub Scout, Scout, Brownie Guide or Guide.
History
. . .
Chelwood was purchased by 1st Keynsham Scout Group in 1978 with funds gained when part of
its Headquarters site was sold in Keynsham to the local council for carparking.
When bought it was a 'field' since when we have created the gateway and drive; built a
toilet block and barn, installed water points around the site and planted 5,000-6,000
trees. In order to do this without substantially depleting Group funds we have tried to
make the site self-financing.
Site
rules . . .
Our regular visitors will know we have tried to create an atmosphere of informality with
as little in the way of rules as possible. Unfortunately, every year something occurs
which forces us to add yet another to our list. Please help us to keep Chelwood clean and
tidy without even more restrictions.
Camp Sites
. . . We do not normally
allocate specific sites but rely on Leaders to sort out their own preference. On a 30acre
site which is always under camped, there is plenty of space for everyone.
Wood . . .
Do not cut any
live timber. We always aim to have a supply of firewood available. Please return all
unused firewood to the one central wood pile. Please do not create mini woodpiles
around the site.
Fires . .
. Do not dig
pits for any reason. Half bins are provided and must be used. After use - return to the
area next to the wood pile. Making sure they are emptied on the nearby pile and all ashes
are cold.
Waste . .
. Burn all waste
possible. A skip is provided for all other rubbish.
Toilets .
. . They must be left
clean and tidy. If there are several Groups using the site it is up to you to organise a
rota that works. Elsons must not be used without specific permission from the
Warden. Elson Fluid is not permitted.
Dogs . . .
Dogs are not encouraged.
Permission must be gained from the Warden on each occasion.
Cars . . . In dry weather you may drive to your site and
park. In wet weather all vehicles must stay on the site roadway and use the carpark.
Otherwise, the site will quickly become unuseable to others camping after you. Do do drive
unnecessarily on site.
Boundaries
. . . We enjoy good
relations with our neighbours and work hard to maintain them ... Please observe the site
boundaries and use the official footpaths maeked in the local OS map. Anyone found
damaging someone elses property is liable to be evicted from the site immediately with
possibly the whole of their Group as well.
Caravans .
. . A small number of
caravans are allowed on site but must be notified with the site booking.
Pioneering
Poles . . . Pioneering
poles are usually available, free of charge, but must bee returned in good condition to
the rack behind the barn. Please supply your own ropes.
Barn . . . The Barn was primarily built to offer alternative
wet weather accommodation to Cubs. However, when it is not required for this purpose, it
can be used by all who visit Chelwood. Please leave it clean and tidy for the next Group.
Badges . .
. Woven Chelwood Camp
Site Badges are available from the Warden.
Permission
to Camp Forms . . . We
have found an increasing number of Groups camping at Chelwood without having notified
their local District Commissioner. Please make sure you have done this otherwise you will
be camping without permission and could be asked to leave immediately.
Shooting .
. . Due to the potential
risks on a site that is not permanently wardened, shooting of firearms of all types is
prohibited. |
