The display needs to be inside; we are looking for something different and exciting! Not simply people handing out fliers, but ‘have a go’ activities or a ‘Scout Camp’ in a shopping centre! The display needs to project an ‘on brand’ positive image of Scouting.
To enter send some pictures and a brief description to displaycomp@avonscouts.org.uk or post to “Inside Display Competition” at County Office.

]]>Dear DC
THE ‘JUST ASK RECRUITMENT’ CAMPAIGN
As we all know across the County every Group could always do with an extra pair of hands or new Groups could be formed from the national WANT TO JOIN list of 30,000!
The results of the recent New Leader survey showed that 25% of new Leaders came from parents and 63.10% of new Leaders first contact was either the Section Leader or the GSL. With this in mind the ‘Just Ask’ Campaign will have some focus on recruiting of parents, as one Leader said in the survey- he wished he had been asked sooner!
As a DC I am sure you are very busy and will not necessarily being promoting the campaign yourself, can I suggest you find a ‘Recruitment Champion’ from the District who can act as a conduit for further information and who we can work with to exchange ideas and see what and where further help is needed. Please can you come back to me by 1st December 2009 with their name and contact details (simon.crowden@avonscouts.org.uk)
Ideally all Groups should also identify a key person to be an ‘asker’. This does not need to be an uniformed Leader, but someone who is good at asking and can be used to talk to parents, be encouraging and want to involve others etc..
In order to promote Scouting in Avon we have produced a generic i.SCOUT Poster and Car Sticker to use- copies will be emailed out shortly! Your recruitment champion will be able to discuss your needs with the development team. To help involve the Groups we will be running a series of competitions to help increase the awareness of Scouting and help recruit adults. These will start in January 2010 and they will also provide media opportunities, which we can advise on.
The campaign will work if everyone gets involved and we raise the profile of Scouting and keep asking people, this was proved in the 2005 campaign.
If you require further information, need support, or have any additional ideas etc please get in touch with me.
Yours in Scouting
Simon Crowden

COMPETITIONS
To make the campaign a little more interesting and encourage more Groups, we have come up with some competitions:
* The Best New Website – up-date or create your new website making it easier for people to find their local Group and join.
* ‘Adopt an Empty Shop’ with the poor economic times there are lots of empty shops and this would be an opportunity for Groups to put their own large display in.
* Best Outside Display - This could be a Patrol site in the middle of town or free ‘bacon butties’ outside the HQ. Let people see you and JUST ASK questions.
* Best Inside Display - This could be at work, in the local library or community hall. Display lots of ways to help and join.
* Best Media Article - This can be in any media form, just try and get yourselves in the papers, on TV or radio.
* Extreme Sleeping Competition - As you may have seen on the news recently a new craze of taking a photo of a person asleep in bizarre places has spread across the country. This is ideal for the senior sections- as long as it is safe and legal!
* Spot the Scout Car Sticker - The County will be sending out 100s of Car stickers to Leaders via the District Teams. Details on registering will be on the County website shortly.
* ‘Wear your ‘Necker’ to Work Day’ Not quite a competition but we would like to know (with a photo) which company has the most Leaders in.
We aim to tie in these competitions with the Scout Association themes in 2010 and will finalise dates, rules and prizes over next few months.
Please do keep Philip Bird or your District Media Manager and myself informed of what we are doing and we will attempt to support events taking place.
