Timing:
The sessions are advertised as 7:00 pm until
9:00 pm.Helpers should arrive by 6:30 to rig
and launch all the boats before the Scouts
arrive.
Trolleys should be returned to the dinghy
park.
Before the crews arrive, boats should only
have their sails hoisted in calm conditions.
The Senior Instructor will advise whether
reefing is necessary.
Boats should return to the Baltic Wharf
pontoon by 8:30 pm.
Safety:
The Senior Instructor, or a delegated
instructor, will give the Scouts a safety
briefing and supervise fitting of buoyancy
aids before any Scouts are allowed near the
water.
The safety briefing will cover (amongst
other things):

Always wear a fitted buoyancy aid
·
Open cuts to be covered by sticking plaster
·
Keep hands inside the boat when near another
boat or the shore
·
Hold the sheets, don’t tie them around the
hands
·
Obey the instructions of the instructor in
the boat
·
Wash hands after sailing, don’t ingest the
water
Hand over to Instructors:
The senior Instructor, or a delegated
instructor, will allocate Scouts to
instructors at their boats.
Aims of Troop Nights:
Aim to have an enjoyable introduction to
sailing.
Explain what is going on.
Involve Scouts in controlling the boat.
Try to demonstrate

Lying to
·
Effect of centreboard
·
Effect of backed jib
Sailing Area:
Unless specifically varied by the Senior
Instructor, stay between the orange buoy
near the Underfall and the entrance to the
Marina.
Be aware that the other sailing boats are
also likely to be under learner command so
give them plenty of room.
Return to Shore:
Remind that hands must be kept in the boat.
Get their assistance to recover the trolley
and get the boat back to the dinghy park.
Get their assistance to cover the boat.
Remind to wash hands before eating.
Hand Scouts back to their leader.
